The Sunsport Report

March 2009 Volume 1, Issue 1

Editor Christiana Gaudet at her laptopEditor’s Nudes-n-Notes

by Christiana Gaudet

Welcome to the very first edition of the Sunsport Report. It’s funny how many things in life are born of our mundane tasks. This newsletter, for instance, was first conceived in the beautiful Sunsport laundry room, back in December. I guess women have been talking over laundry since we first began banging rocks on our clothes in the stream!

Our idea was to have a newsletter that would inform our members, guests and friends about things going on at Sunsport, and that would give us a place to share news about our community.

In this first issue, you will find contributions from folks who have agreed to be regular columnists for the Sunsport Report. Kathy Voron has agreed to write our community column.   Here your will find all things Sunsport, from petanque scores to community news and favorite recipes. Please submit your “Shout-Outs,” “Thank Yous” and “Get Well Wishes” to Kathy for inclusion in the next issue.

Carl Flick will be focusing on naturism in South Florida. His first article for us is about Haulover Beach, where many Sunsport members enjoy the sand, surf and sun as nature intended.

D.J. Don Sanborn, our naked gardener, has submitted a column entitled “I Dunno.” D.J. has yet to commit to making this a monthly feature. After you read it, I am sure you will join me in asking him to please keep’em coming!

This issue also contains important announcements about our new Activities Committee and a great job opportunity.

If you have anything you would like to share, such as an article, letter or travel review, please submit it to me. You can email it to Christiana@sunsportgardens.com, or bring it to my trailer at site 4A, or leave it at the office. Deadline will be the 10th of each month for publication on the 15th.

As the winter season comes to a close here at Sunsport Gardens, I want to say a special Thank You to all our snowbirds and winter residents. What fun we have had in these past few months! My favorite memories include the Age of Aquarius Weekend, the Prom and, of course, the Midwinter Naturist Festival.

As you return to you summer homes, please travel safely, and keep Sunsport in your hearts. Let us know about your happenings over the summer, and, with your permission, we will include your news (babies, new jobs, house sales, retirements, illnesses etc) in future editions of the Sunsport Report. We look forward to seeing you next season!

To our year-round residents and visitors, remember that the fun never stops here at Sunsport Gardens!

Naturally,

Christiana

by Morley Schloss

I am thrilled that Sunsport Gardens now has a newsletter to report to members and friends news of events and people at Sunsport.  Many thanks to Christiana Gaudet for initiating and editing this important form of communication, and to all those who have made contributions.

Sunsport welcomes your ideas:

  • If you have suggestions for improvements or repairs to buildings and grounds, fill out a "work order" in the office.
  • If you have a suggestion regarding Sunsport policies or procedures, see Morley Schloss or one of the other Board members (Keith Chausse, Mitch Filchum, Carl Flick, Christiana Gaudet, John Koch, Sandra Reamer).
  • If you have suggestions about social activities, see Darlene Ridenour, Bernie or Carolyn Roche, or, during the summer, leave a note in the office.
  • If you have suggestions or questions about children's activities, see Sandra Reamer.
  • If you have a question about existing policies or procedures, see Morley Schloss or Becky Elliott.
  • If you have a question about anything financial or site availability, see Becky Elliott.
  • To contribute to this newsletter, see Christiana Gaudet.

Please use these guidelines for making requests or seeking information.  Avoid asking staff members since it slows their work and they probably can't help.

Sunsport’s Community Column

By Kathy Voron

A very special thanks goes to John and Christiana Gaudet for all their work on the website, wifi, and making all this possible.

On Tuesday night 2/24 Sunsport held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, hosted by Dave and Becky Elliott.

Over 50 volunteers were invited to a meal of chicken, fish, veggies and dessert catered by the Gardens Café. Morley Schloss started the dinner with a warm “thank-you to all” and also stated that it is the volunteers that make Sunsport a great community.

Around the Grounds

Seems we have a lot of enthusiastic gardeners and landscapers.

Just to mention a few: Blaine & Debbie Cook, Debbie & Keith Chausse, Scott Campbell (nautically speaking), Rich Belanger over by the tennis courts and don’t forget to check out Dev Blower’s new digs!

Everyone has seen and admired Janet LeBlanc beautiful gardens around the office and the clubhouse. Her hard work is appreciated by all!

Youth Camp activities include canoeingKid’s Corner

There was a Parent’s Forum on Thursday, March 12 in the clubhouse. Our resident parents got together to discuss school, nutrition, parenting, discipline and home schooling.

Youth camp is scheduled to start Sunday July 19th. Contact the main office for registration or Sandra Reamer at lot 39.

During the festival all the kids were kept busy on fun projects including making Valentine’s Day cards. One young man was asking help in spelling names for his cards. Everything was going smoothly until he asked Sandra to spell “penis”. Thinking that she didn’t hear him correctly, she asked him to repeat the name several times and sure enough all sounded like “penis”. Perplexed, Sandra asked him to point out the person he wanted to give the card to. He then pointed and said “that girl over there” (Julia Norris’ daughter, Phoenix)   Kids, they will keep us laughing!

Local Recipes

I had the opportunity to make a Star Fruit pie (carambola), with fruit grown here on Sunsport grounds. Delish…..

Pre-heat oven to 425º

  • 1 quart sliced star fruit
  • ¾ to 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup quick cooking tapioca
  • 2 Tbsp butter/margarine
  • Nutmeg to taste
  • Pastry for 2 crust pie

Prepare fruit by paring off the edges of the ridges. Remove seeds and slice fruit into ½ in. slices.

Mix tapioca and sugar then gently toss in fruit to blend. Put into bottom crust, dot with butter and sprinkle with nutmeg. Cover with top crust, cut steam slits in top and bake about 35 minutes.

Have a recipe that you want to share? Email me kvoron@aol.com or come by lot 45.

Sporting Events

Fun was had by all who attended our annual Derby Day. The prizes this year were great and $200 was raised for the social club. The last two races were held in the pool “Sea Horse Derby” instead of around it and the “jockeys” rode noodles instead of stick ponies. There was music all day and even dancing in the pool. Maureen Grady sends a special “thanks” to all who volunteered.

Two Petanque Tournaments we held this season. Congrats to the following teams, and thanks to everyone for playing!

The first tournament was held January 17th and 18th. In first place was “French Connection”. Coming in second were “Judy and Her Balls.” Third place was held by “We Four.”

The second tournament had some different results, with “Wayne’s World” in first place, “Yippi” in second and “3J’s” in third.

Days Gone by or Newly Nude

Were you here in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s or are you a “first timer”?

Tell us about it.

Personal and Member News

Looks like we have a new 4 legged member named Chopper (pronounced Choppa). Congrats to Shelia and Paul on their new addition.

Keith and Debbie Chausse also have a new furry friend, a small, friendly dog named “Dude.”

Congrats to the Bishop family on their new arrival, Evelyn Beth Bishop, born on 3/13th.

If you would like to submit stories, suggestions, say “Hi!” or “Thank You” to someone special, or if you have something to sell or are looking for something ….just contact me at kvoron@aol.com

We heard that Wednesday night pot luck on 2/25 was a smash hit. Over 70 dined together and enjoyed a special dessert prepared French connection style. I bet this becomes an annual event.

Janet LeBlanc and her crew have been working around the community areas making Sunsport a more beautiful, tropical paradise. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Stop by and visit with our two resident nurseries. Both Don Sanborn and John Moser have many plants and trees for sale. Anyone donating fruit trees will have their name burned onto a plank at the base of the plant as an acknowledgement of their generosity.

Special Thanks

Thanks Bridget… for being so committed to keeping our pool and hot tub so sparkling clean and inviting.

Thanks Charlie… for years of dedicated volunteering.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the “One-on-One with the Board” event. We had lots of good suggestions for ways to make Sunsport even better!

A Special Note from the Co-Chairs of the new Activities Committee

We would like to thank Bob and Helen Fekete for all their hard work as chairpersons of the Social Club. Beginning with the 2009-2010 season, Carolyn and Bernie Roche (Lot 25A) and Darlene Ridenour (Lot 26) will be the co-chairs of the new Activities Committee (formerly the Social Club).

We are currently working on the calendar for next season and are open to all of your suggestions. You can email us at camera4321@aol.com.

We are looking forward to an exciting, fun-packed year. See you in the fall!

A child playing at Haulover Beach in MiamiA User's Guide to Haulover's Nude Beach, Sunny Isles (North Miami), Florida

by Carl Flick

Did you know that the north end of Haulover Beach County Park (in Sunny Isles) is reserved for clothing optional or naturist use? Since its inception in 1991, the nude beach has attracted the brightest amd most creative from the entire 5 million person region of South Florida. Lifeguards guarantee that swimming remains safe and regular police patrols ensure that the crowd is genuine and appropriate.

In the early days of the 1990s, one had to park almost a quarter mile away. But when the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department assessed the needs of thousands of new visitors (solely coming for the naturist beach) they constructed an entirely new parking lot on the northern extreme of the park. Cost of parking is $5.00 for the day. Once you leave your car, a boardwalk and tunnel under congested Collins Avenue (A1A) leads first to a new bathroom and shower facility and then on to the clothing optional beach. Signs warn the unknowing of the nude beach ahead, but most locals are indeed aware and tolerant. This is Miami.

People follow an established beach etiquette at Haulover, as with any other nude beach. Essentially, what is appropriate at "textile beaches" is appropriate here. Nothing more, nothing less. The beach can be a sensual experience, but not a sexual one. If those boundaries are broken, the police are there to arrest. In Florida, mere nudity does not constitute "indecent exposure". Rather, State Statute 800.03 dictates that both nudity and a state of sexual arousal must be evident for an arrest. Still, law enforcement officers also have State Statute 877.03 for disorderly conduct as an essential "catch all" when incarceration is necessary and the infraction is less clear.

Don SanbornI Dunno…

(An article sharing the random thoughts of Don Sanborn,
a.k.a. the Naked Man of “Nekked Man Garden & Nursery”, a.k.a. “D.J.”
)

So Saint Peter says to the 3 men, “I’m sorry… but your names aren’t on the list to be admitted to Heaven today.” (This is the first line to a funny joke I’d love to tell you all, so be sure to ask me the next time you see me.)

So why am I writing this today? And why are you reading this? We were recently asked to share our thoughts about living here, with Morley and the new Board, and I responded. “What’s happening here at SSG?” I only find out about events / improvements by word of mouth or after the fact. As a 10 year resident, at times I feel like an outsider. I suggested a Monthly newsletter, only to find out that others had suggested the same. Voila!! I was advised that it was gonna happen… and could I contribute? I dunno….OK!

Have you read your RV’s owners manual recently? You should drain your hot water heater every 6 months. I didn’t know that… and it cost me. Fortunately the water just ran / drained to the outside of the trailer, and I only had to replace a $12 valve… but it could have been much worse.

OK…. Like my DJ method… I will be “all over the road” in this column.

As Nudists / Naturists; we are all viewed as different /”weird” by our co-workers,

outside contacts, even family. But we know better. While we are varied in our beliefs regarding many subjects, age, background and economic situations; we have a common belief. “The Boys have a Penis and the Girls have a Vagina” and that’s the way it is & that’s no big deal! I only mention this as a reminder that in spite of our differences… we have a lot more in common than most.

Ah-h-h…Seeking Poker Players for a little fun on Friday nights. (DJ…Lot 3)

The SSG Social Club recently held a meeting regarding the entertainment for the 2010 News Years Eve Celebration. I presented the opinion that a DJ could provide a wide spectrum of music that would appeal to all ages or musical / dancing interests. It was decided that a DJ would not be the entertainment of choice for this year’s party. I have no problem with the voting results of those who attended and their decision. But I am slightly disappointed that so few “year round” residents even attended the meeting. The SSG Social Club provides entertainment year-round, and you DO have an opportunity to express your opinion. And why not take the opportunity to enjoy / reap the “Benefit” of your membership living here in a “resort”?

I dunno…. spilling my guts like this. Wonder if there’re be a second “I Dunno” column. Anyway… THANKS for the opportunity to share my thoughts… opinions… like elbows, (or another body part); everybody has one!

Oh yeah… just one more thing. Have you ever seen / visited the Nekked Man Garden & Nursery? Why not? Go to Lot # 3, walk up the driveway and walk thought the yard. Don’t wait for that engraved invitation or the all-you-can-eat Bar-B-Q. (Lived on this site 5 years… ain’t gonna happen!) Yeah… I DO sell a plant once in a while!

And the 3rd man says, “So I hid in the fridge and here I am!”

A Thought from our President

I believe that it is a misconception that naturists are generally viewed as 'weird'. Today most people view naturism as a normal and acceptable recreation and lifestyle choice. If we believe that people generally view naturists as different or weird, we will project it and manifest that result.
